Algal Taxonomy
EmailJulianne has worked as GLEC’s principal algal taxonomist since coming to GLEC in 2014 from Michigan State University’s Zoology Department. She has over 20 years’ experience conducting soft and diatom taxonomy of phytoplankton and periphyton from freshwater and brackish ecosystems throughout the world, including the Great Lakes region. Since 2013 Julianne has been the lead soft algal taxonomist for the EPA’s National Rivers and Streams Assessment and has provided QC phytoplankton taxonomy support for the National Lakes Assessment. She has extensive university level teaching experience and is an active member contributor to the Society for Freshwater Science and the USGS National Water-Quality Assessment Program. Julianne holds a Ph. D. in Algal Ecology from Michigan State University, and M.S. in Algal Ecology from Bowling Green State University and a B.S. in Botany from the University of Michigan
