December 2022 - The 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) established an unregulated contaminant monitoring program by which public water systems monitor - on five-year cycles - for up to 30 potential drinking water contaminants that are not yet regulated under the SDWA. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water, Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water is responsible for implementing this program under the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR). In December 2022, GLEC was awarded a five-year $30.5 million contract to provide technical and logistical support to the UCMR program, the fifth consecutive UCMR support contract awarded to GLEC since 2000. The UCMR 5 cycle will monitor for 29 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and lithium. GLEC contract support includes implementing the monitoring program; coordinating data collection with states/tribes/territories and individual public water systems (PWSs); providing compliance assistance to PWSs; assembly and distribution of sampling equipment; tracking sampling and analysis completeness; outreach and education; and evaluation of results. UCMR program outcomes benefit public health by providing EPA with scientifically valid data on the national occurrence and population exposure of selected contaminants in drinking water for possible regulatory action
